Privacy policy
Effective June 12, 2026
Who we are
keystroke (keystroketrainer.com) is a free typing trainer operated by an independent developer. For anything in this policy — questions, access, correction, or deletion — email privacy@keystroketrainer.com.
Using keystroke without an account
You can use the trainer and the typing test fully anonymously. In that case everything — your lesson history, statistics, preferences, and theme — is stored only in your browser's local storage, on your device. None of your typing data is sent to us. Clearing your browser data erases it. Like any website, our hosting infrastructure (AWS) transiently processes ordinary request metadata — IP address and browser user-agent — in standard server logs for delivery and security; we don't use it to identify or track you.
If you sign in
Accounts exist only to save your progress across devices. When you sign in with Google (via AWS Cognito) we store: your email address, your name as provided by Google, and a sign-in identifier. Your typing results then sync to our database — per-lesson speed, accuracy, score, per-key timing statistics, mistake patterns, and timestamps — along with your preferences (goal speed, lesson length, display options). We use this data to show you your own progress and to run the features described on this page — never for advertising or profiling. The site operator can view account records (email, name, account status, results) for support and moderation.
Cookies
We set one cookie, only when you sign in: an httpOnly session cookie (keystroke.idToken, expires after 30 days) that keeps you signed in. There are no tracking or advertising cookies, so there is no cookie banner.
Leaderboard and country
Signed-in users with a qualifying lesson are ranked on the public leaderboard anonymously by default — others see "Anonymous" and a speed, nothing identifying. Only if you choose Show my name in your profile do we display your chosen handle, and only then do we record your country (derived from a CDN request header — never precise location). You can also hide yourself from the board entirely. We never show your email publicly.
What we don't do
- No analytics scripts or third-party trackers.
- No advertising (if that ever changes, this policy will be updated first).
- No selling or sharing of your data with anyone.
- Internal usage statistics are aggregate-only (e.g. lessons per day overall).
- We keep short-lived internal error logs (technical details, occasionally including your account id — never your email) to keep the service reliable; they are deleted after ~30 days.
Where your data lives
The site is hosted on AWS (Amplify); sign-in is handled by AWS Cognito; account data and results are stored in a Neon (PostgreSQL) database. AWS and Neon process this data on our behalf and don't use it for their own purposes. When you sign in with Google, Google's handling of your Google account (including the fact that you signed in here) is governed by Google's own privacy policy.
Retention and deletion
We keep your account data for as long as you have an account. While signed in, you can delete your account yourself in your profile — this deletes your account, results, settings, and your sign-in record at AWS Cognito. We retain one minimal administrative audit record of the deletion (including the account's email address) to document that it happened. If you can't sign in (for example, a suspended account), request deletion by email at privacy@keystroketrainer.com — it works either way. Anonymous local data is yours to clear at any time via your browser.
Your rights
You can request a copy of your data, correct it, or have it deleted by emailing privacy@keystroketrainer.com. If you are in the EU/EEA or a similar jurisdiction, these are your GDPR-style rights of access, rectification, and erasure; we honor them for everyone regardless of location.
Changes to this policy
If our practices change (for example, if we ever add analytics or ads), we will update this page and its effective date before the change takes effect. See also the terms of service.
